One excellent season followed by three utter dogshit ones.
The flaws of the show are clear in the first season, endlees numbers of red herrons, pseudo intellectual idiotic dialigue and reducent scene after redudent scene, but the chemistry and performanecs of Harrelson and McConaughey masked them.
The remaining seasons were more if the same without Harrelson and McConaughey, though Ali did almost carry the third season.
It is mind boggling the love this show gets, then it is also equally mind boggling the love Cage gets…
Then again, what do I know, I mean time is a flat circle, herpa derp…
I loved the first season and I genuinely love your take enough I want to watch it again to see if you’re correct.
Remembering what stood out for me was the narrative vision having a single director and writer steering the ship.
Imho it should have been one and done but it was too popular so they just had to fuck it up and make more seasons because American TV is goddamn stupid.
BBC would have done a single season run and be done with it and no one would think anything else of it.
The first season outside of the two leads does have some amazing moments, The shootout in the housing project and just The overall feel is excellent, I agree it should’ve been a one and done.
Season 2 was terrible because HBO forced them to do a second season right away before giving them time to write a decent script. I thought Season 3 was good. Season 4 was well made in all respects, but I just didn’t care for the story.
I can’t say you are wrong tbh. The red herring was quite frustrating in the forth season, I didn’t dig the ending. They do have stellar casts that really carry it but I wouldn’t say it’s anywhere near bad though.
Cage is great when the director is good. E.g. ‘Matchstick Men’ and ‘Leaving Las Vegas’. And of course ‘Vampire’s Kiss’ is Cage dialing up his style to the max.
However, if Cage is the best thing about the film and the film is not ‘Vampire’s Kiss’, things are gonna be tough.
2 really was not utter dog shit. The worst part about it was the fact they didn’t have a single director. Many shows wish they could have written a season 2 of TD, and I am a season 1 stan.
three was… meh. Felt too performative in the writing (returning to the tropes of s1 like multiple timelines and buddy cop) and reddit solved every twist. That’s how formulaic and predictable it was. I watched maybe two episodes of s4.
S2 was utter dogshit… I swaer to god how many scenes did Vaughn and Reilly debate what it means to be a parent four…five? How many times did Ferral pass out at the bar with the chick singing her garbage song.
to each their own I suppose. I thought it was a cool season compared to any other show. Hard to compare to S1. I cant stand all the melodramatic acting these days, though.
no, but admitting it isnt the best tv has to offer doesnt make it dog shit. S2 came out in like 2014 or something. Also band of brothers and got are both based off of books. Of course the writing is gonna be good. There are issues with s2, sure, but i wouldn’t say its the writing. As a complete story told in a single season it is pretty good.
It’s widely regarded as being great. I would love to hear your reasoning. Granted season 2 and 3 weren’t as good but season one is legitimately a gem.

There are always lots of reasons the train wrecks… and none of those change anything, the train wrecked.
The reason matters if they fix it.
Season 2 sucked because it was rushed. Then they stopped rushing them and the quality has been much higher.
No it hasnt…

The most amazing thing The Four Seasons did was made Jodie Foster terrible… That’s an achievement.
My hot take. I don’t get the fascination with her. She’s mid.

It was a season of nothing happening.

You take S2 of True Detective over, the Wire, breaking bad, band of brothers, chernoby, GOT 1-3…
You do you, pal…
