The bottoms of some image posts and some thumbnails are cropped at the top and bottom in the feed.
This makes things really annoying for cartoons and memes where there is a caption or signature at the bottom that gets cut off.
For example, if you were to add !thefarside@sh.itjust.works to your feed, where the captions are always at the bottom, and the punchline gets cut off.
In my settings, Under the “Compact UI” setting, I have selected “Not compact - expand images” selected, but it’s still not giving me the entire image in my feed.
Back in the old days, there was only a width limit, but it would lead to tall, skinny images (like manhua) taking up multiple screens of vertical space (relevant issue).
There is likely a better solution than just a hard cut off, but my css skills pretty bad and I am on mobile atm. If it is a pure css problem, then you might be able to fix it using custom css in your user profile.
Edit: found this snippet in !piefed_css@piefed.social
.post_teaser_image_preview a { max-height: unset !important };This has been my number one gripe for piefed since I started using it, so this is a nice band-aid, but I’d love to see a better solution implemented. At least for now the punch lines aren’t cropped off of a bunch of the memes/jokes/comics any more.
Yeah, I suspect that for a lot of newcomers, this poor cropping is a dealbreaker. I know I quit reading The Far Side because of the cropping.
A bit of an update for you. I took another crack at the css on this and I think landed on a solution. The new css is live on the test server, but should be coming in the next released PieFed version. The new css should scale the image so that it fits into its frame and isn’t cut off. I have included screenshots below…
New css:

Old css:

Wow that looks 100% better. I don’t have any Piefed gold, so take my Lemmy gold kind stranger.

As well as the CSS trick from wjs018 you could switch to Tile mode https://piefed.social/c/thefarside@sh.itjust.works?layout=masonry and then when you tap one of the images it’ll open in a slideshow of the entire community.
maybe there should be a user config for cutoff length because like owlhouse would take up a massive amount of feed space.
