I don’t necessarily mind a game this big if it’s just single player and I spend a few weeks beating it then uninstall it. But 200gb for a game I’d be leaving on my computer indefinitely due to the multiplayer component? Nah. There’s a limit to my storage space.

And this is coming from a PC perspective. Not console. Console space is even more limited. Plus, the PC install size will probably be larger. And from what I know the online portion isn’t even available at release, so that’ll add more size.

Download Size Revealed To Be 210 GB

install size will come in at a whopping 210 GB

Download size or install size? Which one is 210GB?

Because, typically, the download is a compressed installer and the installed, uncompressed size will be larger.

making it one of the largest games ever.

For that matter, I’m curious: which ones are larger?

I guess there’s always Microsoft Flight Simulator, which can be staggeringly enormous if you download all the available map data. But what else is in this league of file size?

Wasn’t warzone like 250gigs, because you had to download mw too? And they accidentally left in uncompressed voicelines of every language and shit like that?

      Ark can be that big.

Only one I’ve seen. Even the entire ME trilogy is a bit over 100GB

Most of the size of a game is the assets. The assets are already compressed though. Ever tried to compress a .png or .mp4? The output ends up being basically the same size (or larger!). The bigger the game, the bigger the % of assets related to code. On a game of 210GB, the game code is probably less than 1GB, so >99,5% of the game is already compressed.

Unless they are doing something stupid with the assets. IIRC ark stored the same tree each time it appears in the game, instead of just storing it once. In cases like that, it can be compressed even if the asset was already compressed.

But with a game of this budget, they probably even compressed assets that may not be compressed in other games, like 3D meshes. Since they probably know that people are turned off by big install sizes.

True, but there will almost certainly be some expansion during install.

        • Text and code usually compresses well, and some of the game’s data will have to be text and code. Not to mention that it will probably need lots of library and database-like files which are just going to be long lists of often-repeating information – perfect for compression algorithms to shrink.

        • The game likely will include many assets that are similar to each other in some ways, but not identical. Like, say, the texture of an in-game advertisement sign. There may be a hundred different signs in the game with different images for the front, but maybe there’s only two or three different images for the back side of the sign. Or, say, the game may have dozens of different character meshes, but most of those meshes differ only in the relative scale of different elements, so data like the connections of nodes to one another and bone names/relationships are the same for each mesh. Or, say, the game might store several different versions of the same car as entirely separate files, even though there are only slight differences between the versions. Or, say, the game might include several different versions of the same music file to be played in different situations, but for some parts of the song’s duration, they’re exactly identical. … In cases like those, they still need to be stored on your PC as separate files in order to avoid the performance overhead of calculating it all on the fly, but any decent compression algorithm could find the parts of any files with identical overlap and compress that down significantly.

I’m not saying it’s likely to double in size when installed or anything, but I’d expect it to grow by something like 5% at least. So, at least a few extra GB if 210 is the download size.

I feel like this will be a clusterfuck of a release. People will be excited while millions will complain because of one small detail. Or it will crash and burn due to some day one glitch.

Some people have also hyped it so unbelievably much that the game will absolutely disappoint a lot of those people, i’m kinda excited about it all tbh, i’m not even gonna play it ever but this whole hype cycle has been so massive I can’t really look away at this point
