I dont exactly have a problem spending $2000 on something, but $2000 for a phone is just stupid.
I guess you could say that about a lot of things; cars, etc.
But just on principle. That phone is not costing 4x more to make, and is not giving me 4x the value as a $500 phone. Or, fuck, give me 10x the value of the $200 phone I have right now that does absolutely everything I want (I guess a better camera would be nice).
I have an expensive phone. It’s a Fold 6 - I got it after using a Fold 3 for 4 years, and replacing it when the outer screen of all things stopped working, and the trade-kn on my old phone was still worth like $1,200 towards the new one even with a broken screen.
I used to get a new-model mid-range phone every year or 2. Now when I buy I go for the previous year’s flagship and use it for a longer period. Financially it’s probably a wash, though I know I could absolutely be spending less and be just fine.
But it’s the piece of personal tech I interact with the most and for that I’m able to afford it, so I’m willing to spend the money.
The company that made the Nexdock is planning to make a phone. It will be Android but it can bring up a full Linux desktop that can access the Android storage. I am considering getting it and only using Android for calls, texts, and a couple apps while I install phosh UI in the distro and focus on using that.
yeah the issue with these is cooling, that’s why neo turned whole chassis into a heatsink, so I’m a bit sceptical based on the quick showcase video they show on the webpage.
All this stuff about the memory crisis; I don’t think phones suddenly cost 4x more to make and if they do, how about don’t put fucking 16GB of RAM in phones?
I know the Signature is supposed to be their ‘ultra flagship’, but 2 grand?
The worst thing is that I’d even be half interested it it wasn’t this expensive…

I would maybe consider spending $2000 on a phone if it was functionally as usable as a laptop. Which Android is not.
Apple could totally make their new phones work with MacOS as they’ve shown with the MacBook Neo, when connected to a monitor, but they won’t.
It would be pretty amazing if they did though.
I think a powerful Linux phone plus a laptop chassis that connects to the phone somehow and turns it into a laptop would be really nice

I can see 16GB phones being useful, but there needs to be cheaper options
The only use I can see for them is gaming and there are better devices for that, for less money.
Running your own LLM models is another one I guess, but I don’t think there’s many people doing that.
Some of us enjoy mobile gaming
But if you had the choice between playing on a phone and playing on a Steam Deck/ROG Ally/MSI thing would you still stick to your phone?
Yes :) because firstly I can carry my phone in my pocket everywhere and secondly it’s nice to not have Yet Another Device.
I’d pay 2 grand for a car if it was running
I do not have $2000 so I would mind spending that much on anything
