We’ve largely been able to put aside our differences and unite together to defend against the reactionaries.

I remember about a year ago the landscape of the site was quite different; posts were still largely positive, but people were tearing into each other more harshley in the comments if they disagreed with the other’s brand of leftism.

While federation has exposed us all to a fair share of horrific takes, it has also united us all in a Hexbear-versus-the-world sort of way. In some ways, I like how the inner community feels a lot more now, and it makes me hopeful for the future.

Relatedly, thanks everybody for keeping the dunk tank in !the_dunk_tank@hexbear.net so I can choose when I’m willing to expose myself to it.

We have become a new vanguard against the reactionaries and the transphobes.

I do wish there was a way for individual comms to automatically ban or delete posts if they come from other instances. It would really help keep some of the spaces safer from the vile shit that’s spilling into them. For instance auto ban anyone who isn’t a Hexbear who posts in any of the trans spaces just to ensure that community can maintain a safe space.

I do have hope that within a few days most of the vile shitheads will be banned so our safe space communities are actually safe space communities again

interesting take, i do think it would be beneficial to have some spaces in the hexbear space for hexbear members only (which iirc is currently in the process of being coded)

Yeah, I don’t have the same feeling for pre-federation Hexbear as most people. Pre-federation Hexbear was filled with pointless struggle sessions that make people here low-key bitter and resentful with one another. You could have some emotionally charged argument but somehow are still supposed to mingle with your opponents the next day. Part of it is because mods are, for good reason, more reluctant to ban people involved in struggle sessions because that would mean they’re “taking a side” even though most struggle sessions usually have an obvious right and wrong side. Lemmy, owning to it being a shitty Reddit clone, also lacks the tools to quarantine struggle sessions by separating them into their own posts. In federation-era Hexbear, they could pretty much just ban outsiders with impunity, so mods can just drop the hammer on the side with Ledditors and call it a day.

However, I do think Hexbear being open will attract reactionaries. That is inevitable. And it will continue to attract reactionaries even if Hexbear defederates from every instance because our notoriety is too high now. I think a sanctuary instance that only federates with Hexbear is a possible solution admins should explore. Initially, it should just be completely empty, essentially a janky way to see Hexbear posts without seeing loser Ledditors (with an empty instance, an account from there will presumably see nothing under Local and only Hexbear posts and comments under All). If the workload is not too high, admins can begin moving certain comms like anti_cishet_aktion into the sanctuary instance. The only hard part is account creation. In order for this to work, admins will have to close off account creation to the public. You could only have an account there by requesting an account with your Hexbear account, and the admins will create your sanctuary account if your Hexbear account is of a certain age and in good standing. This also doesn’t prevent reactionaries from creating wrecker Hexbear alts to start shit at the sanctuary instance, but honestly, they always had that capability even before federation.

Can’t say i agree with you after being called out for hurting the feelings of monogamous cishet dudes in that dumb “friendzone” thread just yesterday. Admittedly, that was by a four day old account and by one of the mysogynist sex worker haters from lemmygrad that everybody here somehow loves so much, but that just shows it’s kinda naive to assume that struggle are less of a problem after opening the floodgates to the septic tank that is the internet at large.

Also people have largely forgotten how to use CWs when posting dunk threads, shit’s grating.

that thread has legitimately made so uncomfortable with how many upbears the reactionary takes were getting. also I ended up calling one guy an incel after he was saying that men not getting laid would lead to a fascist take over and that pick up artist are what the left needs. he then went through my post history found something where I was talking about my mental health and he left a comment sexulizing both me and my therapists. it was so gross it was a two moth old account but the influx of these creeps are emboldening the worst aspects of people on here with bad takes. also I was soooooo pissed to see how those twerps were talking you you specificly. you were dropping hot fire and they would all be better off if the took in your perspective.

I’m used to guys not being able to handle when women speak up, it’s one of the things you have to learn how to deal with when you come out as transfem and suddenly get relegated into the “i don’t have to take this person seriously” camp. But yeah, that thread was gross, and i’ve only red half of it because there was just too much stuff that made me want to take a shower and wash the grease off.

So thanks for the kind words, i appreciate them a lot, especially from somebody who actively does something to make this place less of a crackerfest.
