I obviously don’t disagree. I don’t think it’s weird to report on peaceful protests that are undemocratically banned; I think it’s weird to separately report on the police doing normal police shit that happens when someone gets arrested.

“84 year old priest has house searched by police” is newsworthy if the priest didn’t do anything illegal. It’s not newsworthy if they did.

“Some people did something illegal which should not be illegal” is newsworthy, but that’s not the content of the article.

It’s reporting that’s just trying to play on the emotions of the readers.

yeah twoc/twocced/twoccing is a legit acronym. I realised that the supposed acronym for nonce is “Not on Normal Communal Exercise” rather than “Experience” which makes more sense in the prison context. It can be hard to be sure of word’s origin, but in these cases:

• On TWOC, the police actually charge people with “taking without owner’s consent”. You can find the source of the words in the relevant Act.
• On Nonce, I don’t think anyone has ever heard anyone refer to someone as “not on normal communal exercise” - it’s an awkward phrase - why is it referring specifically to exercise rather than something more general - “Not in Communal Accommodation” - NICA? “Isolated for own safety” - IFOS? It stretches believability in the supposed source phrase in a way that TWOC doesn’t. The earliest attestation of the theory I could find is also from 2012 but the word has been around longer.

But they did join a disruptive protest that hadn’t been approved. So… that’s to be expected.

Would it be inappropriate to raid the house of an 84-year-old who joined a far-right protest that was suspected of having been organised to incite racial hatred? I don’t think so. The sole problem is the one we already knew about, which is that peaceful but disruptive protest has effectively been made subject to police permission.

Because fanfic authors are not visual artists, so they lack the skill. But probably still want the visual appeal and associations that come with having a (non-stock) book cover.

Isn’t that the reason to share creative stuff, to share a part of your “soul” with others and hope to genuinely touch someone, across time and space?

I think that’s getting a bit metaphysical. I think for a lot of people it’s just the impulse to share something neat. The mere fact that you think it’s neat means you’re sharing something of yourself, just not on this soul-bearing level that you’re talking about. It’s like the difference between sharing a cute cat pic and sharing your true thoughts on your own cat whom you love and cherish.

Do you know the term to search for in the CoC? There’s clearly something changing here. My partner was in fact prevented from getting an alternative train by EMR last year, and cross-country staff said they didn’t understand why EMR hadn’t triggered the agreement that would allow it.
