Coal-burning power plants released more mercury last year, according to an analysis by The Times. It reverses a downward trend of emissions of a metal that interferes with brain development.


Burning coal also releases radiation, because of traces of radioactive elements. This exceeds radiation emitted by nuclear plants for equivalent power output.
This is true only so long as the nuclear power plant is well-run. The US just scrapped a big chunk of its nuclear safety regulation
