Brought to you by the guys responsible for Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Starfield.

Yeah, Bethesda’s dead. There are like 3 people left from when they actually made good games and those are the ones least responsible for those games being good

If they ditched Todd and Emil completely and brought over the writers from ESO they’d have a chance, provided they poached some competent quest designers from another studio. Todd’s apparently been sidelined post-Starfield but AFAIK Emil is still their lead writer and he’s been as responsible as Todd for the sorry state of Bethesda’s writing and worldbuilding.

And he’s gotten worse at it over the years. Like he ostensibly wrote the Tenpenny Tower storyline/quest for FO3, and then rehashed it in Starfield except worse because the literal only options there were siding with a CEO who wanted you to either commit genocide, convince an entire people to become his slaves, or give his mass murdering oligarch buddy a huge commission to let the generation ship leave without murdering or enslaving them. Whereas with Tenpenny Tower you could just kill Tenpenny on the spot, all the corporate freaks on that planet are invincible and the quest literally cannot even be failed, it can only resolve by you doing what they want.

Like FO3 was bad and railroady in bad ways (with its forced loss in a cutscene and nonsensical original ending), but Starfield is even worse in all of those ways and I can’t help but see it as Emil getting increasing creative control and driving away everyone with actual talent.

And on absolutely every level too. The worldbuilding is this weird unseasoned-mashed-potato facsimile of two Heinlein novels (the really fascist one and the cowboy incest one), the narrative is just aimless meaningless slop that goes nowhere and says and does nothing, the quest design is half-assed brainwormed dogshit to the point that it’s absolute peak is when it just does the thing Titanfall 2 and Dishonored 2 did with a split time place and it does it meaningfully worse than either of those did it, and the character writing is just dreary and abysmal nonsense.

Like mechanically the game was fine, but they just failed completely and utterly at every stage of writing its world and content.

I have my doubts Bethesda could write a good story if it came fully formed outta their doo doo ass. What, are they gonna make me find my father again?

Maybe heresy but I dont really care that much about the story and its not like Skyrim was some amazing feat. Coming from someone who liked Skyrim

Similar with Fallout 4 really. I think both of those games are on a level that is totally doable.

He did say Skyrim’s story was “mediocre,” and honestly I think that’s being generous as far as the main quest goes.

It kind of sucks for Skyrim because the story is also extremely setpiece oriented, but setpieces need to either be very mechanically good (so nearly none in Skyrim) or tie into something that makes them feel good (so nearly none in Skyrim) and otherwise it feels like being locked into an amusement park ride.

I’m on this level with Bethesda games too. Who else is out here trying to make a game where every single broom is interactable? There’s a magic to that kind of simulationist game design which is the reason why people still mod and play the crap out of Skyrim and FO4, even though I also agree that Bethesda have gotten worse at doing it every single time.

The alternatives, games like The Outer Worlds and Avowed, flop for me because instead of leaning into what’s unique about the game style they spend all of their effort trying to fix the things that are “broken” with it, which just results in a kind of mid open world experience.

Let Kirkbride off his leash Todd, c’mon, it’d be funny

Tbf there are way bigger issues than the overarching direction of the writing. Even if they made Kirkbride the director and said everyone else in every department has to accommodate his whims to the best of their ability, the project would still be dragged down by the overwhelming incompetence of everyone else. Kurt Kuhlmann as the lead designer (which was promised to him years ago btw) might have been able to salvage something, but when they broke that promise and lost him entirely I think that was the final nail in the coffin. Absolute hacks like Emil Pagliarulo are gonna have such an outsized role in the game, it’s gonna be a complete dumpster fire

Sorry, I was making an obtuse joke about Erika Kirk because my brain is cooked. I don’t know anything about Kirkbride besides a little bit of his writing for those series.

Kirkbride has always been pretty quiet about real-world political stuff, and tbh I do get the vibe that he could have some real wacky and problematic views, but his wife Lady N is also active in the TES lore communities and she’s really cool so I’d be really surprised if he ever actually went further right than milquetoast progressive liberalism

I mean his most famous creation is an intersex genderfluid sex-worker god who is problematic yet strangely likeable, he can’t be a complete chud

            • Yeah, I should be more confident that the guy that made Vivec a central character that married the male protagonist stand-in in CODA wouldn’t be a CHUD, but I have seen some weird pivots. Especially amongst the more bizarre and weird personalities.

I wonder if Bethesda games are going to suffer from the same thing as Final Fantasy, where all the fans are in their 30s and 40s because it takes so fucking long for the next game to come out now that young people aren’t becoming fans. Add on the issue that each game they release is worse than the last and it doesn’t bode well for long-term prospects.

Then again people love their open world slop, so perhaps it’ll work.

Bethesda games or more accurately TES and Fallout aren’t on the level of Rockstar games, COD or sports games but since Oblivion/Fallout 3 they’ve been up there on the list of “4 games a non-gamer normie dad gets for his PlayStation/Xbox” where Final Fantasy has never been on that level of mass appeal in the West. It’s just too niche, too anime and too Japanese which is why they tried making the newest one all dark and gritty

Final Fantasy was THE console RPG series for years. It was massively popular, and well-known even to non-gamers, to a degree I’ve never seen since.

In the PS1 era, certainly, but that was a time when console gaming was still dominated by Japanese games. In the 2000s Western-made games became huge in the West to the point that Japanese devs wasted many years trying to ape them to win back the Western market

it’s going to be either the size of Solstheim from Skyrim and there’s a dude every 2 yards yelling at you to do their quest (randomly generated ofc) or it’s going to be half the size of Skyrim and there’s a hub every 50 yards that dispenses quests (randomly generated ofc)

I have a genuine question, why do people give a shit about how large a Bethesda game is? I could attempt to make the worlds largest pizza and cover it in ketchup and candle wax but that wouldn’t make it good.

To me it seems odd being a size queen when your partner is Graham Linehan.

Don’t get hyped by PR stunts before release. It’s Bethesda/Microsoft. It’s very likely going to suck. Don’t preorder. Wait for TONs of different reviews.

My prediction will be a predictably shallow main quest that relies on the player making few to no choices to progress.

The side quests will largely be fetch quests or randomly generated nonsense that is not fun or interesting.

The world will somehow be more generic than Skyrim while making the most lackluster refrences to past lore and canon. I am also predicting extremely small cities, maybe with the exception of one or two. And that is if they don’t go the starfield route of world generation.

Combat may be better than skyrim tho (Fallout 4 was a big improvement over 3)

I just can’t see a Bethesda that ever makes anything as good as Morrowind again.

If you are looking forward to ES6 just buy morrowind and download Tamriel Rebuilt. It’s the best Elder Scrolls game ever made at this point and keeps getting updates
