    the unamerican dream or sth

no but seriously, money isn’t what it’s about, it’s about having reliable living conditions. i don’t actually care whether i can buy my own apartment, as long as i can live in one. and i also don’t care about buying the newest Super Mega Car as long as i can get from A to B somewhat reliably and fast.

and i don’t intend to ever have lots of money. actually i’ve considered living in a monastery for the sole purpose of not having to care about worldly needs. i don’t want to think about “how do i buy X”, i just want it done and move on with my life. realistically, there are no acceptable monasteries around me (i think) as they all suck for different reasons (such as not being allowed to have a girl for sleep-over etc).

Being 100% remote employee with moderate amount of money in a country with low cost of living is realistically the closest I’ll get to this, so I’ll take it.

No you don’t. Unemployed means you’re actively searching for a job. It’s stressful. You want to be retired with a lot of money.

Sorry I guess I should have been more specific. In the USA you are not legally considered “unemployed” unless you are searching for a job. https://www.bls.gov/cps/definitions.htm#unemployed

Maybe you are legally unemployed in other countries but the U.S. does not consider you part of the statistics otherwise. So that “unemployment rate” doesn’t include you in it (if you’re in the U.S.).

I’ve had two stints of “no job, have survival and fun money and not looking” for a year and two years. Best times of my life. Working from home is almost as great, but it makes having to go into the office horrifyingly worse by comparison.

Also full-on luck for myself and my partner. Something happened and we both received free money during the couple years we were both unemployed on top of having been investing a bunch. We also got wild healthcare due to some circumstances, so I went from not having been to a doctor since I was a kid to doing like ten doctor things and elective surgery and tests out my butt cuz everything cost nothing. It was glorious, and I miss it very much.

              its 100% luck 😭

i had a really great paying job, but it was mentally and emotionally exhausting (not an inherent issue with the job, just didnt work for me). im currently living off of savings from it.

i do advise that if you try this, you should start looking for a new job before you think you need to in case it takes longer to find something decent

Or you could spend those decades working and retire with millions, only for predatory health, elder care and funerary systems to siphon all of it away within a few short years. Forget about Boomers leaving an inheritance for the next generations, there are entire industries dedicated to sucking out all their wealth right at the end.

I feel like this would fit 90% of people. The rest would probably want to live in a villa with servants etc. But most people I assume just want to live and enjoy life without needless stress.
