Just curious. If you’re training for a race, what’s your weekly mileage like, and what distance are you training for? I’m stuck around 20 mpw right now because life, kind of want to live vicariously through other runners. Hoping to eventually get back to ultras, but probably won’t have time to run enough for that for at least a year or two.
My last marathon training block, i got up to 120k in a week. I think it burnt me out a bit, especially given the mediocre race result i got.
I’ve gone back to focusing on cycling now, so i’m doing around 30-40km/week. I aim for 2 quality sessions a week and one long run. But without a race on my calendar, i get pretty lazy and just end up doing a lot of easy running
Wow, that’s a lot of mileage for a marathon to me. Maybe not enough recovery? I’m used to a max of 80k a week for a 50k race
It was a lot of mileage… sub-elite mileage, for a very pedestrian time goal, lol. Oh well, lesson learned…
i’ve never done anything longer than a marathon. 50k/ultras sound crazy to me… my attention span is too low to run for that long. Kudos to you
I’ve switched from thinking about my training weeks in terms of distance to thinking about them in terms of duration, to avoid the trap of running too fast in order to reach a distance target.
I’m currently doing 3 sessions a week, 1 quality session, 1 45m base run with a few strides at the end, and one 90m long run. Base run and long run capped to zone 2. I also do a bare minimum of 2.5 hours cycling per week, which I cap to zone 2 as well, along with 3 sessions of 5/3/1 strength.
After having come to terms with the fact that I’m limited by a relatively weak aerobic system, I’ve intentionally dialled down the intensity a lot, and I’m starting to see some slow but steady progress. It’s nice!
I’ve fallen into that trap. Maybe I’ll look into the time based approach
Im curently doing about 18k a week with 18k walks. So 6k x 3 a week. Ill be doing a half marathon in may next year. Had to dial it back a bit because my left knee was hurting a bit but now it feels better. Once it gets closer to the half ill be doing some more hill training for it.
Sounds like a good place to be with a race in the distance before you hit a training block
Training for my last ultra (80k/2500m) I averaged 50-60 k per week. I run commute, so weekdays were 2*5k. Tried to get in some extra mileage in the weekends. Normally I’ll do 30-50 k weeks depending on what I have time for.
Run commuting sounds like the dream. Do you have a shower at work or just stay as-is?
We have showers, lockers, a towel service and a gym available, so very lucky. Running is actually faster than taking the bus, too.
I wouldn’t get in nearly as much time on my feet without being able to run commute. Plus the kindergarten is not too long of a detour …
Sounds like the perfect setup. Kid drop-offs and pickups are what really make the logistics challenging for me. I’m glad you’re making it work!
I run around 12 - 16 km a week currently. That’s usually spread across 3 - 4 shorter, slower runs as I took some time off in the middle of the year due to injury and need to build up strength in my calves before I can tackle longer distances again.
Recovery mode! You doing any strength training?
I do reformer pilates regularly. I didn’t have a calf injury specifically, it’s just that I run in a way that puts more force through the calves so without a slow and proper build-up after a break I do risk soreness/injury in them (which obviously means less time running). The actual injury is just the ongoing after effects of a meniscus tear I had a few years ago. Unfortunately, it can unexpectedly flare up again from time to time and I need to rest the knee until it settles down.
Currently doing about 40 now supplemented by cross training (biking). Preparing for a 100mi ultra at the end of this month. At this point I’ll be tapering and letting up on long runs and overall intensity. Looking forward to a few weeks off - been locked into this training block for the last ~6 months or so.
Did my last real long run this past Saturday - 26 mi in a little under 4h and didn’t have much residual soreness. Just gotta do that about 4 times back to back in a few weeks.
The burnout at the end of a long training block is real. How are you feeling about 100 on that mileage? My longest has been 50 miles and did that on about 50 a week.
Cardiovascularly I’m confident I’ll be fine. It’s 40 mpw plus about 3h on the bike per week. My primary concern is when my legs will start hurting due to time on feet and the course itself is moderately technical. My best guess is that I’ll feel good until about mile 70 then it will be an exercise in survival.
I’ve done about 17 ultras (16 of those are 100k races and one 100 miler previously, but that race was about 6 years ago so I had “youth” on my side).
I’m less concerned about finishing - aiming to finish in around 25h, but we will see. I’ll honestly be happy with a finish.
