but shit like this really grind my gears
Like, the “start menu” -> type in name of program workflow is so awful. “ter” should become Terminal (Konsole)?? “settings” should return System Settings, not fucking KDebugSettings.
GNOME just works so much better, and literally the only reason I stopped using it is because I want my games to screentear. And the patch to enable that is taking forEVER to land.
The only one of these that really annoys me is kcalc. But that may be more because search ‘calc’ brings uo libre office calc above it so its somewhat my own fault.
I remember making that mistake and seething while LO Calc took a million years to load
omfg YES LibreOffice programs always give you time to think about what you’ve done!!!
Every week this happened to me until I uninstalled kcalc.
nah I get that
I was onboard until
I want my games to screentear
what? explain yourself

Yeah so I have always pretty much only played competitive shooters where less input lag is a priority. Having the frame on screen delayed by varying amounts hurts my head
Non-first person games are fine I don’t need tearing
This is a solved issue these days with adaptive sync. You can have all the reaction time without screen tearing. Any modern monitor with a fast refresh rate will generally do this if you let it (turn on the option).
I can say though that the implementation of adaptive sync is not 100% perfect on Linux. My Freesync display flickers visibly on all the major DEs and WMs with adaptive sync enabled, looks fine with it off, and it worked normally on windows when I tested that without a flicker. But it’s almost certainly some specific quirk of my hardware
My experience was thankfully completely positive. I turned it on once, never thought about it again. It just works. I happen to have G-Sync monitor, obviously paired with an Nvidia GPU, but still. I’m also very sensitive to tearing, so getting a higher refresh rate with gsync was the main reason for getting a new monitor at all, to finally be done with tearing (over a decade ago by now).
Playing old competitive games really is like that sometimes. Having to run a winxp vm to play starcraft broodwar on a third party matchmaking client with 0 input lag is the furthest I’ve gone but that was long ago
Beside the point, but
Ctrl+Alt+TOnce you
Ctrl+Alt+TYou’ll nevertermagain
The search in unity de that ubuntu used to have was always my favourite other than it would shamelessly advertise amazon to me. The problem is when they stopped supporting it i was left with kde or gnome where like i would prefer a hybrid of the two and not have to deal with drawbacks. I loved unity so much even if everyone else hated it i thought it was genuinely quite a sexy desktop environment with the right theming
World’s only Unity DE enjoyer (braver than the troops)
ⓘ Remember to enable JPEG-XL support in your browser, even on your phone!
Second Unity DE enjoyer checking in, it was perfect for 2-in-1s at a time when touch interfaces and drivers were kinda iffy. The only real alternative tablet OS option was Windows 8, which was abysmal and had two UIs duct taped together. Somehow neither one worked well for desktop or touch.
I recently convinced a friend to switch from linux to windows, she was already impressed that a program popped up if you just searched the right category, so things could always be worse :)
(tbh a direct name match to the program should be prioritized over a category, agree with you on the settings though)
switch from linux to windows
That must’ve been some convincing!!Haha other way round ofcourse, I am nkt that much of a sadist ;p
Sure it’s annoying for that use case, but it’s finding programs that are named what you’re searching, which is kind of how I would expect it to work
I would expect it to prioritise start-of-string matches before “anywhere in title”. If I used KDE I’d angle for a PR honestly because it seems like an objective improvement.
It should still prioritize title of the program before the description though, just my 2 cents
I love fuzzy matching but the sorting is a bit odd here.
I also went through this hiccup. GNOME does a good thing by baptizing all core apps as generic names (imagine typing “Nautilus” for files).
When I use KDE I have all my apps shortcutted to the task bar or as a desktop icon.
It may also depend on who is distributing KDE to you. Some distros include or exclude certain components by default.
The problem is that generic names makes searching for answers much more difficult.
For 100 points: This three letter command starts gnome’s default terminal (and you need to know this to set it as a keybinding)
kgx?
I really like kde but yeah I have to admit the launcher is kinda goofy like that. Also would prefer if it had similar defaults to XFCE like multiple virtual desktops, ctrl+alt+t to open a terminal and ctrl+alt+left/right to switch desktops. I always have to dig into their labyrinthine system settings menus to add those shortcuts and some extra desktops after a fresh install.

I get where you’re coming from but I wouldn’t have any clue where to even start with “make a new entry”
OS desktop is supposed to just work by default I shouldn’t have to fiddle around with it for hours to make it usable.
But I think it’s somewhat reasonable that the search priorities direct name matches over generic name matches first.
I disagree with this so much. In the case of “ter” it should prioritize “starts with” matches first 100%.
- I want to access my files. I type “files” and it brings up KFind ??? What brand new user is supposed to know tf “Dolphin” is?
- Likewise, how am I supposed to know the console / terminal is called “Konsole” ? “con” brings up “KDE Connect” btw

I’ve been using Vicinae: https://github.com/vicinaehq/vicinae
I have it bound to super + Q. There’s also the similar Krunner on alt + space by default
But also, ctrl+alt+T
This drove me nuts as well, there is a lag too, if you press enter too fast it doesnt update the search results before opening whatever is on screen… I rebound the super/windows key to the task switcher instead which doesn’t have that lag
