Even though this is obviously a joke, the mere statement - right after the entire rightwing media apparatus pretended like he was the kingmaker non-stop - will probably make Asmongold shit himself.

As an emotionally unbalanced person, the stress from this statement might just send him.

    And I’m here for that.

A prison need not be a torture chamber. It would literally probably be more humane to keep him in a well-maintained prison that is focused on safety and rehabilitation rather than let him continue to be a shut-in in his hive of roaches and mold.

I think we’ve had this conversation before but I just think that’s a very unhelpful way of communicating outside of people speaking within whatever mutually understood theoretical context I assume you are speaking from.

For example, I am a Marxist but I think it’s counterproductive to speak assuming the somewhat peculiar Marxist definition of “state” is the one that will be understood by a non-Marxist audience, nor that getting them to buy into the justifications for that verbiage is a good use of time in the vast majority of cases. Do they want to say state = government? Yeah, sure, whatever, call what I want a classless state, I don’t really care. I am much more concerned about the “classless” part of that.

If someone breaks the law and is being kept in a specialized site for confinement for a long period of time (for any number of reasons), to a typical person that is a “prison” and I think it’s fine to just call it that rather than look like a mystic who is trying to make prisons that aren’t prisons because the definition you stipulate makes a carveout (and whether that is a fair assessment or not, it’s what you’ll get). The actual issue of rehabilitation is surely more important, and the language we use to describe it is stipulative so long as we are carefully preserving the concepts.

Also, maybe this is redundant, but to my knowledge there are and have been many (though a small minority) of prison systems that are sincerely and commitedly oriented toward the rehabilitation of at least certain categories of prisoner, and we still call them prisons. Do we need to insist that they are (for example) re-education camps and that re-education camps are not prisons? It just doesn’t seem useful to me in most cases.

Edit: it’s worth being clear the literature uses a special definition, but it’s good to generally try to speak to someone in their own vocabulary to the extent that the real concepts involved can thereby be accurately represented, and when using specialized vocabulary it’s usually much better to introduce terms than reappropriate common words.

Most people who I talk to, who want rehabilitation and not a carceral system to reenact slavery uses other words then prison. In America at least, prison has a very specific connotation to mean punitive punishment. If you go around saying you want to put people in prisons. I normally agree that words are whatever and it doesn’t help to split hairs, but this is one instance where I feel like, at least if you are American, it is important to use a different word for prison.

Let me put it another way, as a white person, if I go around and say “I want to put landlords and corrupt people in prison” a lot of Black and other marginalized groups are going to roll their eyes and dismiss me because I’m using the language of liberals. I am also using a dog whistle that usually means “I want to put Black people back into slavery”. Even if I say “landlords and corrupt people” it’s going to be assumed i’m blowing smoke or have a messed up idea of those categories at best if I add on the word prison. I also can’t blame these people in the slightest, because liberals are just like that in some places.

Sure, if that’s your environment then that makes perfect sense. What do you usually call the not-prisons? Sorry if I missed that part. Rehabilitation centers? A lot of things currently called that are functionally also punitive torture chambers (not all, of course).

I asked my wife, who is a therapist, and she says that probably something like “Social Rehab,” aka Social Rehabilitation facility. I do agree that the current ones are also not any better, but I think the word choice would help to get people on the right page. With the negative past and understanding of the word prison, it would be a lot harder to do good work with it while also allowing corruption to happen a lot easier.
