Just search “<book name & author> read free” and it’ll give you archive or something. As much as I’d prefer to reward artists, it’s not in the cards atm

I prefer to read on an e-reader because I like reading laying down and in the dark and it’s just more convenient to hold a small backlit tablet than a book. It was such a happy day when I discovered the Libby app and realized that it works with my local library and syncs with my e-reader. My lazy ass can check out library books from the comfort of my bed.

Was in my hometown the other day and walked by the husk of what used to be the video rental store. I felt a bit sad but then remembered that libraries exist which are way cooler!! :) and I also have a library card and then I was happy.

I’ve stopped buying most media. Almost all my physical books are bought at an extreme discount from overstock, or the occasional sale (Target weirdly has good deals once in a blue moon). Even if I could afford $30 for a book, do I want to?

Keep in mind if you want to own your books, many libraries sell off books (and other media) they no longer need, as well as donated materials (very cheap in my experience). It’s a good way to support your library and buy some books :)

Also, if you have too many books (or other media), consider donating whatever you don’t want to your local library (assuming it’s not one of the ones trying to burn books).

Fun fact. Many libraries have tons of extra services, like help with writing up your resume, genealogy services, access to peer reviewed scientific research, language learning, etc. There’s a lot you can get out of that library card. Check it out!

You don’t even have to restrict yourself to your town’s library, most will let you just walk in and sign up for a card. I go to a Makerspace in a different city because my local library doesn’t have one, and use digital resources for a library in a different city.

There was a fee I had to pay to sign up for a library card the next town over. $15 for the year which I was happy to pay: a 3d printer, video game library, seed library, library of things with telescopes, musical instruments, cookware, and a ton of community events.

      Libraries kick ass.

I should get more library cards. Ours is county and they are talking about privatizing and getting rid of LGBTQ+ materials :(

I’ve got a library card for Wales and I’ve never even visited the country (sadly, yet). It’s fantastic

Thanks! I’ve actually been helping teach Welsh and help run a learner’s discord for learning Welsh so you can guess I’m excited to go eventually lol. I want to do the whole Cambrian Way when I go if I can get someone to go with me

Love it! Don’t forget that libraries want you to checkout materials. It’s good for their stats and funding, and helps them see what people like.

In my case, it’s not just that costs are high, but also that space in my home is limited. Even with several bookshelves, it’s apparent that I need to be more selective about purchases because they take up a spot. Going to the library instead is a win/win.
