The niche boards for problem solving is about the only thing.
The thing I miss most from reddit is the ability to find decently sized communities for extremely niche topics. Lemmy just isn’t big enough to support that. However, I certainly don’t miss it enough to actually go back to using Reddit. There’s other places to go for that (like Discord servers / Matrix spaces).
My new thing is im trying to gradually reduce my topic specific questions in catchall Ask comms like this and instead submitting to the actual community that concerns it
Itll be slow but hopefully that can meaningfully shift my own stuff to help beef up the existing topical comms, if everyone does something similar we may actually get somewhere.
Sometimes im just gonna post here cuz its easier and people sort of know my deal already but i do intend to try to put things where they belong in hopes of making Lemmy more like that in terms of stronger non-centralized topical comms that are more likely to have domain-experts or at least more knowledgeable than is likely to be found in general purpose Asks
Not really. A lot of it felt fake before AI content came along.
general agreeableness and niche interests. i feel like before the exodus there was more people willing to receive ideas and humanize others there than here now. it feels a lot more despairing to share my ideas and the indomitable human spirit here. (196 is much better here on that front but just 196 is nowhere near enough…)
people asking the right questions in this sub and the right questions in AskLemmy lol. at least all of the questions are a lot better here!
Yes. I miss lifting/fitness content
Some sizeable language learning communities. Unless I’ve been living under a rock and some c/LearnJapanese or c/tokipona on some Lemmy instance absolutely took off
I also miss some gaming communities, but those being connected to some commercial product I can get they don’t do well on Lemmy 😅
Yes and no. I miss some of the more niche communities and some subreddits that had great sources of information.
But I don’t miss the other 90%.
I love that you can binge a TV show from 5-10 years ago and then go to Reddit and see all of the post episode discussions. The next time I watch a trashy reality TV show, I will miss not having Reddit post episode analysis. When I’ve looked in the past, the best I could find on Lemmy was someone posting nudes of contestants from past seasons. The makeup and skincare subreddits were super informative. IDK if they’re still good since I’ve been mostly Reddit free lately.
r/asksciencefiction brought up a lot of great ideas and interesting arguments.
One of my favorites was ‘what if the Addams Family had discovered baby Kal-El?’
I miss the ol’ reddit switcheroo and also I miss the “you’re thinking of Y. X is when (something X is definitely not)”
not really but I would love for some game and other niche communities to make the federation their main place to collaborate.
/r/ModernMoo , which (IIRC) is just some guy from Ireland who likes posting pictures of his cows. I unsubscribed from virtually every sub before I left, but I am pretty sure I am still technically subbed to that one.
I miss forums like r/religiousfruitcake, r/confession, r/vent, r/rant, things like that, as well as certain fandom-specific forums; it feels cozier & more personal here, but it’s not as comprehensive.
I miss ShittyMorph. Randomly coming across one of those Hell in a Cell comments randomly always made me day.
Maybe his handle is available…
No. Because, although I don’t have an account there anymore, but I still read there using Redlib.
Tell us more, please. Do you access it via web browser and in a PC? I was using Hydra for Reddit in my phone, but they recently removed the access point to see content when not logged in
