  • I was at a shitty crustpunk bar once getting an after-work beer. One of those shitholes where the bartenders clearly hate you.

So the bartender and I were ignoring one another when someone sits next to me and he immediately says, “no. get out.”

And the dude next to me says, “hey i’m not doing anything, i’m a paying customer.”

and the bartender reaches under the counter for a bat or something and says, “out. now.” and the dude leaves, kind of yelling. And he was dressed in a punk uniform, I noticed

Anyway, I asked what that was about and the bartender was like, “you didn’t see his vest but it was all nazi shit. Iron crosses and stuff. You get to recognize them.”

And i was like, ohok and he continues. “you have to nip it in the bud immediately. These guys come in and it’s always a nice, polite one. And you serve them because you don’t want to cause a scene. And then they become a regular and after awhile they bring a friend. And that dude is cool too.

And then THEY bring friends and the friends bring friends and they stop being cool and then you realize, oh shit, this is a Nazi bar now. And it’s too late because they’re entrenched and if you try to kick them out, they cause a PROBLEM. So you have to shut them down.”

And i was like, “oh damn.”

and he said “yeah, you have to ignore their reasonable arguments because their end goal is to be terrible, awful people.”

And then he went back to ignoring me. But I haven’t forgotten that at all.

How does removing the leadership of online hate organizations from online platforms change behavior in their target audience? We study the effects of six network disruptions of designated and banned hate-based organizations on Facebook, in which known members of the organizations were removed from the platform, by examining the online engagements of the audience of the organization. We show that on average, the network disruptions reduced the consumption and production of hateful content , along with engagement within the network among audience members. The results suggest that strategies of targeted removals, such as leadership removal and network degradation efforts, can reduce the ability of hate organizations to successfully operate online .

  • I’m pretty hardline in My beliefs, but I acknowledge nuance. For example, I think veganism is anarchist because human supremacy is an unjust hierarchy. I don’t think carnism is anarchist. But people who are otherwise anarchist can be carnist, because anarchism is a process, not an absolute. Hopefully those people will eventually interrogate their biases and stop eating meat. Stuff like that.

I do not understand the thought processes of the anarchists who are pro-AI. I understand the excuses very well, but I just don’t understand how an anarchist piles that many excuses together into a conclusion and thinks they’ve arrived at it logically. It’s like being pro-oil and saying “Well I have an oil well in my backyard and I’m using a clean burning generator, so it’s anarchist”.

Also, the more someone claims to be a hardline anarchist, the more I expect of someone. I don’t expect liberals to know anything about neopronouns because that’s not the world they live in. But with anarchists, I expect them to listen when I tell them I use capitalised pronouns, not accuse Me of lying.

  • Pretty sure Trump won 2024 because a bunch of people weren’t happy with Biden and decided not to vote that time. If Kamala had had the same voter turnout Biden got, we wouldn’t have war in Iran.

Two years ago there were mass protests in the US against Israel. Public opinion had radically shifted and the politicians were slowly starting to listen. Then the voters put Trump in charge. Now the protesters are too busy protesting for No Kings and getting raided by ICE. Those neutral voters made a bunch of extra work for the protesters and cost us peace in Palestine. USA could have already cut ties with Israel by now.

  • That’s right, arguing with psychotic people further alienates them from society and prevents them from getting support. Being part of a community has a stabilising effect on one’s emotional wellbeing. If someone has a paranoid delusion, society arguing with them is just going to make them feel less belonging and more paranoia.

Some delusions can be harmful in and of themselves. If your schizophrenic roommate thinks the government put a tracking device in their wrist, don’t let them cut it open to get the device. Call a crisis support line to ask for help.

But the only harm solved by putting trans people back in the closet is the very harm transphobes themselves inflict on trans people. You can’t argue someone out of gender dysphoria, you’re just hurting them for no reason. Other than, as the transphobes claim, to prevent other transphobes from harassing them. That’s a self-fulfillment paradox.
