a couple snippets from the interview. the first snippet is about Tom Morelloa doing some concert to promote voting in the midterms. the second snippet is him saying that he didn’t vote for Kamala because of her complicity in Gaza genocide, he doesn’t use the word genocide.

Is there an argument that people’s focus on Ed Sheeran is indeed a distraction from what they should be focusing on?

Yeah, 100 percent. It’s all right to shame him in this moment because he deserves the shame, but not the focus. The focus is your and my tax dollars are going to commit horrific war crimes in the Middle East, and that, I believe, should be the focus and what we should be doing our best to stop in its tracks.

It’s a clickbait, it’s salacious, it’s, “Oh my gosh, poor Ed Sheeran.” First of all, has Ed Sheeran never seen a Macklemore performance before in the last three years? He certainly should’ve known what he was getting into.

The one thing that’s sort of adjacent is, this is a time where speech is being vilified and is a crime, where the truth is a crime, where skin color is a crime, where immigrant status is a crime, where gender is a crime, where sexual orientation is a crime. And it’s my belief that the true crime is the rise of authoritarianism, and the true crime is the erosion of freedoms, and the true crime is an impending environmental disaster. And so my hope at each one of my shows, I deputize the audience as anti-fascist crime fighters, and that’s really the way that I think you have to look at the world right now. Like, what are the real crimes that are happening, and what is it that you and I can do to stop it?

Now that I’ve gotten you fired up — your Power to the People Festival. What is its most essential purpose?

It is not PR or hyperbole to say it is a festival of peace, love, justice, and music. In a time where war is celebrated, this is a festival of peace. In a time where hatred and division are rife, this is a festival of love. In a time where injustice is the norm, this is a festival celebrating fighting for justice. In a time where there’s a lot of shitty music, there’s gonna be a lot of great music on this stage, so we’re going for four for four.

How much were the midterms on your mind when you scheduled this?

As my dear departed mom, Mary Morello, who passed away at 102 years old, was a very political person, said, “You’ve got to fight the fascists every which way you can.” One of those ways is at the ballot box. It’s not the only way, and you should not just think that because you’ve done that. Voting is a piece on the chessboard, and that you try to create an environment where in between the voting you can fight for a more just, a more peaceful, a more equal world.

And so, is the festival three weeks before the midterms? Yeah. Does the money from the festival go to voting rights organizations? Yeah, it does, but the festival is about something much bigger than that. It’s about what kind of world do you really wanna live in, and should we fight for that world, or should we settle for the one that’s being spoon-fed for us by the oligarchs?

Returning as promised to the electoralism issue — there are some on the left who tend to argue it doesn’t matter, don’t bother voting, both sides are the same. So what would you say to someone on the left who says, “Listen, man, I listen to Rage Against the Machine, and I know everyone’s the same. It’s about tearing down the power structure. Doesn’t matter who you vote for. I’m not voting”?

On the one hand, I think that rebellion is self-care, in a way, but I answered that already. Mary Morello was 100 percent right. You have to stop the fascists every which way you can. First of all, a lot of people who I greatly respect and admire the sacrifice they’ve made to try to get people with my color skin to be able to vote in this country, and have died, been lynched for it, they’ve been shot in the back for it, and it’s very disrespectful to their memory to do that.

But that in and of itself is not going to change the levers of power in a significant way. It’s not. It’s not. You should do it. But it would be like, okay, great, you vote, and on the next day you start working. You start working harder for the world you really want without compromise and without apology. And not just putting in the hands of whatever corporate Democrat you choke down your vote for in that particular election, that it’s your job to make the world the way that you think it could be to help those that are the most in need and to hold those accountable who are most guilty.

Do you feel that people on the left should have voted for Kamala Harris?

I’m crystal clear that people’s conscience cannot allow them to do something that they fundamentally believe is wrong. I was the scheduling secretary for United States Senator Alan Cranston. I saw how the corporate Democrat sausage is made. It is worse than you think. And there is a reason, there is a righteous fury at the corporate controlled, money controlled electoral system we have that is absolutely legitimate, and people cannot choke down — I understand it — voting for a candidate that’s responsible for what happened in Gaza, and they just can’t do it, and I’m not gonna blame them for that.

But I think that putting it on them is the most cowardly thing. Put it on the fucking Democratic Party. First of all, I don’t believe it’s their responsibility and they’re never gonna necessarily never do the right thing, but I think it’s all of our responsibility to co-create the world that we want and not point fingers at people that were just like, “Well, you know, my conscience didn’t allow me to do that, so it’s your fault.” I will not co-sign that.

Did you vote for Kamala?

I certainly did not.

You did not?

Did not. I couldn’t do it.

I didn’t realize that.

V for Vendetta — that one inch of who you are belongs to you, and they can’t have it. Now, I live in a state where it may not have moved the meter, but I just couldn’t do it. Couldn’t do it.

When’s the last time that you didn’t vote for the Democratic candidate?

Can’t remember the last time I did.

Wow, okay. I thought you were softening a little bit.

Can’t remember the last time I did.

No shit? The lady who said there must be a peace-fire… [cheers] … for at least six weeks (or some similar bullshit). And didn’t let any Palestinians speak at her big party. And told other activists to go to another rally for whatever they were saying. She lost? I wonder why.

It’s not difficult to meet your voters where they are if you actually listen to them.

The point in not voting for Kamala is to put pressure on the democrats to stave off the authoritarian apocalypse they are delivering. It’s not just stay at home and do nothing, but make your voice heard. Make sure people know what your demands are, organize with others. The dems are holding Trump as a gun to your heads saying “vote for me or else you’ll get Trump” while bombing and killing in your name. And with your vote secured they keep sliding right, trying to appeal to people like the conservatives that aren’t voting for them. So counterbalance that. Become part of the class of people they have to appeal to, make them earn their vote. You only get one, don’t give it up for free.

You realise you’re doing exactly what conservatives want you to do?

They know it’s not possible to win your vote, so instead just convince you not to vote, and / or criticise your own side.

…it’s not possible to win your vote…

Lets take a look at the requirements to get votes:

                • Be against genocide
                • Be against the bombing of children
                • Make healthcare on par with the rest of the first-world
                • Stop supporting Trump
                • Stop supporting rapists
                • Stop supporting masked thugs, from kidnapping, raping, torturing, stealing, and murdering
                • Stop taking money from the workers, and giving it to the rich

None of that seems impossible at all. It actually seems pretty easy to me. But the Democrats would rather help put Trump in power.

          https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/10/8/kamala-harris-says-iran-is-greatest-adversary-of-us

          October 2024:

In an interview with the CBS television network aired on Monday night, the Democratic presidential candidate said Iran is the “obvious” answer when asked about the country she considers to be the US’s “greatest adversary”.

“Iran has American blood on their hands – this attack on Israel, 200 ballistic missiles,” she said. “What we need to do [is] to ensure that Iran never achieves the ability to be a nuclear power. That is one of my highest priorities.”

Meanwhile, the Biden administration continued to enforce Trump-era sanctions against Iran and added dozens of its own against Iranian companies and officials.

Harris “unequivocally” denounced the Iranian missile launches. “I am clear-eyed: Iran is a destabilising, dangerous force in the Middle East, and today’s attack on Israel only further demonstrates that fact,” she said on October 1.

The vice president has repeatedly pledged to continue to arm Israel, citing in part what she calls the threat of Iran, despite growing anger over well-documented Israeli abuses in Gaza and Lebanon.

Democrats lost the presidency on purpose. Kamala never intended to win, she copied and pasted the Biden’s policy website 1 day before the presidential debate. The purpose of the Kamala campaign was to obstruct any anti-genocide candidate from running. Biden pretended to be able to run to block any Democratic Primary from happening and then Democrats ran Kamala to lose on purpose.

Kamala ran campaign ads that said she would be stricter on the border than Trump would be. Who is saying that Trump isn’t harsh enough on immigrants? Nobody. Republicans don’t believe that and Democrats don’t want that.

Kamala lost every single swing state. The DNC blocked trans people from speaking at the DNC. Tim Walz said that a top priority of his vice presidency would be the expansion of Israel’s territory. Kamala campaigned with Liz Cheney and leaked documents showed that they knew that doing this would hurt Kamala’s polling chances. Kamala sent Bill Clinton to the Dearborn Michigan to tell the Muslim voters that the West Bank and Gaza belong to Israel.

Zionist Democrats are happy that Trump won because he’s doing everything that they want to do and he takes the blame when it upsets the majority of the public. Last year, Chuck Schumer was posting tiktoks begging Trump to start the war with Iran.

How did it turn out? The Zionists in both parties love that Trump won because Zionist Republicans and Zionist Democrats are on the same team, Team Genocidal Settlers.

Quite well, actually. Kamala or Trump winning would have resulted in the exact same outcome in Gaza. The vast majority of the Gaza deaths were during Biden’s term. Trump’s Gaza policy is “continue all of Biden’s policies, but be more performatively cruel about it.”

So in terms of the actual impact on Gaza, Trump or Kamala winning made no difference at all.

However, what has changed is that support for Zionism has become politically radioactive among the Democratic party. This was only possible because Kamala’s genocide support cost her the presidency. Her loss delegitimized pro-genocide voices among the Democrats, and the party has moved substantially on the issue.

So again, the actual condition on the ground in Gaza hasn’t changed, but Trump and Kamala had identical Gaza platforms - full support for genocide. At least with Kamala losing, there are some hopeful signs of optimism for the future.

Something isn’t “insane bullshit” just because it goes against your sports team. The cold hard, unavoidable truth is that the vast majority of the deaths and destruction in Gaza occurred on Biden’s watch. Trump just continued Biden’s policies, though admittedly with more performative cruelty.

No I think Trump has been worse on Gaza than Harris would have been. The cruelty isn’t just performative, it has hurt real people. But between the two of them, Gaza was doomed by the bipartisan consensus no matter what.

I agree that Trump has made pro-Israel stances absolutely toxic on the left. I don’t think that would have happened with Harris in office. But the cost has been incredibly high.

I really see no evidence that Kamala would have been any better. This seems to be a vibes-based argument. Trump has more evil vibes than Kamala, so therefore he has to be materially worse for Gaza. In practice, both sides give a blank check to the Israelis. Kamala would have given a blank check to Netanyahu while giving speeches calling for peace and reconciliation. Trump gave the same blank check while calling Palestinians subhuman animals. The actual material reality is the same. Trump’s just cruder and crueler about it.

Her constituency was EXTREMELY against Israel’s actions to the point of HER LOSING BECAUSE OF IT. That would have made a difference. That same constituency forced a sitting president to give up his run for a 2nd term mere months before an election. Dems have to consider their constituency’s stance on topics more than Republicans do.

And now we have a president (and House and Senate) whose constituency doesn’t give a flying fuck about Palestinians.

Never, ever forget that the reason Biden got cancelled was because of a bad tv performance and not the genocide. I distinctly remember all the blueanon folk screaming about holding ones nose and voting for biden until he looked bad on TV, then the dems told them who to blindly support next and when that (very predictably) failed the people that get blamed for the loss are … the voters that just couldn’t swallow what the dems shat out. It’s time to hold the politicians accountable and not the masses that are doing exactly what the system is supposedly for, affirming or not affirming someone for public office.

I’ve been voting for 18 years, since I could vote, been into politics for longer. All I can say is bring up the definition of insanity is what it’s like. You think you’re voting for change.

Yeah I voted for Obama, great he did everything I voted for not to be done. Bombed the shit out of a bunch of countries. Passed a half-ass insurance market that was a only a bit better then getting spit roasted, really just caved in to the insurance companies instead of a UHC/NHS. Didn’t legalize cannabis and not even change the scheduling for it. After eight years, it didn’t seem like much happened. Obama is a very charismatic politician and I voted for him, honestly looking back I kinda think McCain would have been more reasonable since I met him in person and well protested his speech, I’m surprise the security didn’t haul me away. And I write this because Obama did signed off on one of the most atrocious things, and expansion of the Patriot Act. If you thing this whole icy thing is new, no it started with Bush Jr and expanded by Obama.

Biden is the reason why you can’t discharge student loans through bankruptcy. So SLABs became a thing, people investing on your school debt.

Kamala was a perfect example of the shit show the political system is. Last minute changes. A figure that has negative Charisma points. I mean people bring up the whole laughing thing. I get it. We’re all fucked because from covid and you having the time of your life and haha I’m going to be the first female President, didn’t exactly set a good image. Realistically the DNC should have just asked AOC to run and I hope she does in the future. At least it wouldn’t look like a Manchurian candidate.

I didn’t vote for Rump but it didn’t feel like I voted for anything and wasted a day.

Correct. Bot farms universally support conservative positions, so it’s unlikely our objectives or opinions would ever align.

Admittedly, I don’t think the threadiverse has enough users to be a target for misinformation from bots. Last cycle we just saw users that had picked up the talking points from bots on other platforms.

Go to the Midwest and ask them if they would ever vote for a black woman regardless of party.

For the sake of argument, let’s assume that’s true, in which case the Democratic party would have known from polling that running Harris was a losing strategy. So then why did they run her? Why did they cancel the primary and undemocratically force her down our throats?

Democrats have to have the perfect candidate…

Lets take a look at the Democrats:

                  • Keeping the US the deadliest military force in the world
                  • Supporting genocide
                  • Continuing to let Americans die of easily treatable diseases
                  • Continuing to keep Healthcare as the leading cause of bankruptcy
                  • Taking money from the workers, and giving it to the rich
                  • Supporting rapists, kidnappers, murderers and theives
                  • Supporting Trump
                  • Supporting ICE
                  • Torture
                  • Mass deportations

I think your understanding of the word “perfect” might be a little off. We aren’t waiting for the “perfect” candidate. We’re waiting for someone that isn’t a monster. Something that the Democrats refuse to supply.

But no they are fixing mamby pamby assholes who will write a struggle worded letter.

Yes. Because they would rather let Trump and the Republicans win, than fix any of the aforementioned things.

Meanwhile the fascists are talking over and ignoring all the laws and rules

The Democrats are supporting the fascists, and they also ignore the laws and rules when it suits them.

…a young energetic incredibly smart woman running this country…

Who are you talking about? I never saw that candidate

All because people couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a black woman.

Obama is one of the most popular presidents we’ve ever had (I have no idea why, but I have to concede that its true). And Hillary won the popular vote.

Harris didn’t lose because she was a black woman, she lost because she was a terrible politician, who ran a terrible campaign on terrible policies, while riding the coattails of a terrible president.

…she absolutely was not a terrible candidate.

She wouldn’t say “bombing kids is bad”, or “genocide is bad”, or “our economy is terrible, we should do something to fix it”. All of those would have been easy. She ran on unpopular platforms, and refused to distance herself from a terrible president, whose aproval rating was terrible. She was the most popular before she started going on interviews. She spent her entire campaign shooting herself in the foot.

You people just refused to listen to her…

I listened very closely to her. I heard her say that she wanted to keep America “the most lethal fighting force in the world”. I heard her say that she would “follow the law” instead of supporting LGBTQ people. I heard her say “I’m speaking” when people asked her to stop supporting genocide.

…millions of people absolutely loved her.

Millions of people absolutely loved Trump. Do you think that makes him a good candidate?

You have no idea the depth of racism and misogyny in this country.

Yes I do. I’ve lived in this country my whole life. I’ve lived in the midwest, and I have family in the south.

A half black man won because he was half white and had charisma oozing out of his pores and after the disaster that Bush was he was a logical choice.

And she had the easiest election I’ve ever seen handed to her on a silver platter. But she chose to give it up in order to keep supporting genocide, instead of keeping Trump out of office.

Dem voters will drop Dem candidates at the drop of a hat.

Meanwhile, purity tests on the Republican side? No. As an example, even the most puritanical Christians saw the Trump tapes and scandals, and went right out and voted for him, even in the primaries.

They just don’t give a shit about those things and never have. Their “puritanism” is really just about maintaining heirarchies, Trump is at the top of the heirachy so he’s allowed to break the rules, the rules are really just there for women and gays anyway, for rich white men they’re more of a suggestion.

The type of purity tests the right actually has are things like “get your damn hands off my guns” and “abortion is murder.” There are absolutely plenty of Republicans who wouldn’t vote for the party if they didn’t adopt a hard line on those issues. The reason they do vote for them is because, when the Republican base sets a red line, the Republican party takes it seriously and responds to it. Whereas when the left sets a red line the Democratic party laughs at us and expects us to fall in line.

Donald Trump literally threatened to run as a third party candidate if he didn’t get the nomination. Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders bent the knee and actively campaigned for Clinton. Go back further, and the last major third party candidate split the Republican vote and led to a Democrat winning. Which is why the GOP takes it seriously when their base sets red lines.

Trump waffled on abortion, in multiple instances, with little reaction. Some figures like Mike Pence tried to oppose him, and they have precisely nothing to show for it.

He’s been more consistent with gun control. But Trump waffled a little in that area, too, with virtually no drop in polling: https://www.politico.com/news/2026/01/31/2nd-amendment-advocates-issue-dire-warning-over-trumps-pretti-gun-remarks-00758740

It’s just about hierarchy. If you watch Republican political language, they talk about loyalty, belief, “I stand with Trump.” Things like that. Showing loyalty is more important than the actual issues.

It’s a mirror of evangelical Christianity, in a way.

But with Dems, there is zero loyalty. That’s what I meant by “drop candidates at the drop of a hat.” Dem voters don’t care about showing loyalty; the issue takes priority.

“Waffled on” but didn’t actually oppose. The Democrats haven’t just “waffled on” Israel, they have fully supported them, materially, including Biden bypassing congress to send them more weapons. They’ve even changed the legal definitions to recognize antizionism as inherently antisemitic, to try to brand us all as racists. They’ve even made it illegal for us to boycott Israeli goods.

Trump may have “waffled on” certain issues, but at the end of the day he still supported them. Anecdotally, my fervently anti-choice mother was skeptical of Trump, but will point out that he appointed justices that overturned Roe v. Wade, so she doesn’t care. Because that’s her red line, and the party knows better than to try to cross it, and she knows that the party won’t cross it, so she can tolerate some rhetorical waffling, because she knows she can trust them to follow through on the issue once in office. They’ve been respecting her red line on the issue for generations at this point, it’d take more than a bit of rhetorical “waffling” to make her doubt their commitment.

By contrast, the Democratic party never respects the left’s red lines. In fact, even when they say they do, they don’t follow through. Nowadays, they’ve stopped even pretending that they will.

You treat “loyalty” and “the issues” separately, but loyalty is earned by following through on the issues. The Democrats haven’t followed through on the issues the left cares about, so there’s no loyalty. The Republicans have followed through on the issue the right cares about, so there is loyalty. Simple as.

I think you’re misunderstanding. Their point is that the right is loyal to Trump solely because he’s at the top of the hierarchy, and what I’m saying is that it’s not just that, but that on the issues that they really care about, he respects their red lines.

If Trump actually ran on being pro-choice or explicitly in favor of gun control, and still somehow got the Republican nomination, you would likely see a significant number of Republicans voting Libertarian, or there would be some other third-party challenger. The Democrats would likely win that election, and afterwards the Republican party would learn their lesson and treat those stances as electoral suicide, because the right would have disciplined them.

Being at the top of the hierarchy gives a lot of leeway in what you do in your personal life, in terms of scandals and the like, but if you actively start dismantling the hierarchy or turning against the right’s core values, you’ll be replaced. The reason Trump is at the top of the hierarchy is not because of birth (he used to be a democrat) or wealth (Bill Gates is wealthy and they hate him) but because he says what they want to hear and they see him as an effective vehicle to advance their ideological agendas.
