What a non issue right now. Tariffs will get dismissed the same way someone declines a receipt. We have other shit thats more important to fix. Also probably fix your brexit issue while we’re out thanks
Fix your broken electoral system and get money out of your politics and maybe we can talk again.
Why would the rest of the world want a thing to do with us? We’re mostly a bunch of religious fanatics, waving guns around and doing damage with big trucks. Keep us out.
As a Canadian, I kept saying that the USA was a ticking time bomb. We should have worked with Europe a long time ago.
Because we’re still one of the biggest economies in the world and money talks.
Well thanks for unfucking
everythinglikely only a few of the things (we know you by now) that you guys fucked. Now go fuck yourself for a while. Maybe in a decade or two, if you show you are capable of behaving yourself (you won’t) we can see if we can be buddies again. Until then, get fucked
Conflating people and government seems to be an always recurring topic.
Seen so many times, over and over
The willingness to forgive Brexit in this meme is kinda undercutting your conviction
Brexit was more like friends drifting apart. While the US is your friend fucking your girlfriend, slashing your tires, stabbing you and then demanding you pay him.
Brexit was arguably worse because the UK voted specifically to say fuck you we are not a part of your club, whereas the US voters moronically didn’t understand civics yet again and let this moron back into power who then used foreign policy tools to corruptly enrich himself and also piss off all our friends. And when US voters had a chance to vote on how the moron was doing they unequivocally repudiated him harder than any party’s been repudiated in the last 50 years.
What they will be weary of, and totally should be, is that they are just one election shy of another slimebag grifter who’s willing to do the same again. I think these fences are somewhat mendable considering it’s not our people’s animosity toward them, it’s oligarchs that are the problem. And oh by the way there is a huge problem with the EXACT same kind of voters and oligarchs and social media disinformation in every single one of those countries as well. You will need our help just like we needed yours to stand up to this shit. Our people share the same values still, they just need to be reminded of how absolutely destructive and empty fascism is as a philosophy and form of government.
We all need to fix this cost of living crisis among young people because it will only get worse as climate change will create a huge refugee migration and far right extremism will crash on democracies like waves on a beach until it gets sorted out and the rich people actually have to start paying taxes and can’t just buy elections, politicians, and sock puppets online. Or it doesn’t get sorted out and we will live in some kind of cyberpunk distopia resembling Snowcrash, which is the oligrachs’ favorite book and what they based the networked state on.

Na UK did not threaten to invade to get to the oil on Greenland.
It did not start a bar fight and got mad we did not support him enough.
It did not spy on us.
It did not let us down when needed Ukraine we are here for you
They did not wanted to leave with all the money when the club was attacked
US did the unthinkable. That was not just bad it was abusive. All trust was abused to gain a bit of advantage. Europe need to cut ties. We can still be friends but we are not relying on you anymore. Also we are not your army and prolonged arm. Have your army in your country. You are not trusted.
It did not spy on us.
You might want to look into the 5 eyes… or the orwellian laws the UK (and the EU) are trying to pass as of late, because Think of the children of course.
The US voted trump once, to “own the libs”. Then when they saw he was actually serious, they voted the other guy. Only to completely forget about it once again and vote the shitbag once again. Even after having seen what trump was, they voted for him again.
The only reason this time was different is because trump invaded Iran and now the climate-change-hating people would have to pay a few pennies lore to fill their tanks. Even though gas is still cheaper in the US than it was in Europe before the Iran invasion.
Let me reiterate. The only reason the US voted against trump is because he drove up fuel prices. Not the dehumanization of immigrants and its own citizens (he already did that first term). Not the loving foreign dictators. Not making crime legal. The thing that brought him down was oil prices.
“But he most Americans didn’t vote for him!” Most British didn’t either for Brexit. Not voting against someone is basically telling the world that that someone is good enough for you.
“But misinformation! The US people were just uninformed and dumb!” There was a lot of misinformation surrounding Brexit too.
The difference is that Brexit was a single vote, and afterwards a lot of people said “this is not the Brexit I voted for”. Whereas in the US it is “why is trump hurting me? I voted for him 3 times!”.
Another big difference is that Brexit is just the UK exiting the EU. Trump, however, initiated a trade war and is a puppet of our main aggressor (Russia). It also destabilized the entire world with its stupid wars. And sent fuel prices through the roof for everyone. Knowing full well the Europe produces very little oil on its own and is already struggling after cutting trade with Russia.
No. Brexit was not worse than trump.
- Gas AKA energy prices
- The war in Iran
- Immigration enforcement (ICE)
- Tariffs
- Foreign policy (this could have a list of its own)
- Blatant corruption
- Raising the national debt to insane levels
- The push for AI
- The constant culture war
- … etc
I don’t know why everyone keeps insisting the only reason we finally voted against this administration is “because of gas prices”. If that’s what you think then you haven’t been paying attention.
As if we haven’t been constantly protesting ICE, Project 2025, and the “Big Beautiful Bill” for over a year. As if 40/41 municipalities haven’t rejected new data centers as a clear stand-in for the pushback against this AI madness. As if these midterms weren’t our first opportunity in our representative democracy to truly show our displeasure by voting… which we just did. Resoundingly.
It’s pretty stupid to take a whole group of people and trivialize their incentives down to one thing.
I didn’t vote because of the gas, I am still pissed he got back in. Kindly take your broad brush and fuck off.
Did you vote for trump in 2016, 2020 and 2024? If not, you fuck off, the post is not about you.
I’m not using a broad brush, my brush is the size of 1. I’m saying what the US voted for.
The US voted for trump in 2016 and 2024. The only difference between 2024 and 2026 is that the oil prices went up.
His stance in 2026 is the same as in 2024.
Even though he promised to be “the president of peace”, in 2024 it was clear that it was a lie, due to what happened after 2016.
His stance on Ukraine or Palestine have not changed from 2024 to 2026.
His stance of trade wars is the same in 2026 as in 2024.
His pardon power abuse is not news in 2026, he already did in 2016.
His “getting rich at the expense of the taxpayer” is not news either, it was well known in 2024.
His relationship with Epstein was already known in 2024.
Literally the only difference of trump in 2024 and trump in 2026 is that trump in 2024 was not known for increasing oil prices, since he didn’t do so in 2016.
The difference between 2024 and 2026 is that some people that voted republican in 2024 voted democrat in 2026. And what made them change their mind is oil prices.
Let me reiterate. The only reason the US voted against trump is because he drove up fuel prices. Not the dehumanization of immigrants and its own citizens (he already did that first term). Not the loving foreign dictators. Not making crime legal. The thing that brought him down was oil prices.<
Let me stop you right there. The hispanic flip in Texas is almost entirely because ice are disappearing people into black sites at an alarming rate. It’s not just gas prices. It’s a lot of things all at once.
Both Brexit and Trump happened because of idiot conservatives being fooled into going against their interest by oligarchs.
For that they are the same.
Realistically, the tariffs the US has enacted on every country wil never go away. Thats how its always going to be from now on.
And the whole world will stop trading with the US. Will become North Korea of the West.
I like the idea of that but realistically, theyre one of the richest countries and the largest economic block for the short and medium and probably long term.
They already are North Korea of the west. They have a cult deified leader, he says ridiculous things, everyone (especially the american media) take it seriously, his advisors say that what he does is “glorious, historic, unprecedented”, they wear hats that say things like “Trump Was Right About Everything”, many Americans have pictures of Trump hanging in their own homes. Some even have tattoos of him.
When he dies, you’ll see people publically bawling. So many monuments and statues will go up. Hell be revered warmly and nostalgically in any history books or media.
All empires fail eventually.
Based on…?
Based on the already established history that the Biden administration kept Trump’s first term section 301 tariffs on China
In relationship to Canada, Biden kept Trump’s tariffs on soft wood lumber imports and actively doubled them.
Biden also aggressively expanded duties on Chinese electric vehicles by 100%, 50% on solar cells, and 25% on lithium-ion batteries, steel, and aluminum.
Biden also reinstated 25% tariffs on Mexican steel
The Americans support tariffs on their trading partners and their perceived enemies, which is most countries.
This is an absolutely ridiculous way to read the situation, and demonstrates a deeply thoughtless and unserious approach to understanding politics and international relations in general.
There are very specific reasons why both Republicans and Democrats agree on putting tariffs on those products and goods. That’s not even remotely comparable to the current situation where Trump is just wildly tariffing everything in a completely deranged, scattershot approach. Even his own party doesn’t agree with his current tariff policy, they’re just too craven to actually stop him doing it.
What you’re doing is just pointing an inflatable dinghy and The USS Gerald Ford, and saying “These both float, therefore the dinghy is capable of launching aircraft.” Sure, if you ignore literally every single distinction between two things, they’re the same.
You wrote a lot but didn’t say much. Enjoy that inflatable dinghy of yours. Times better spent that way.
We are completely ignoring the amount of taxing Europe has done on imports from small businesses for years prior to this. Why in the fuck is it ok for them to charge more than the price of the product to import it? Why is it ok for them to charge small businesses a minimum amount of fees to import while they exempt big businesses like Walmart? Europe is doing the exact same thing that America did while pretending to do the opposite. Soon you’ll have nothing but Walmart to shop at and you’ll blame Americans for it.
what about___?!
But seriously, claims of whataboutism shouldn’t serve as a defense. Yes, it’s bad nevertheless. No, you can’t shield from the counter-blame by that.
Both sides suck here, it’s time to acknowledge and change it. Don’t hold moral high ground through the virtue of being born elsewhere. Make a change for the better, wherever you are.
I logged in just to tell you, bravo.
I’ve just read the 2 comments of yours in that sub-thread here, and that’s beautifully done.
From that, I can see you are an intelligent being speaking from yourself, not copy-pasting “pre-made” arguments found on the forums like lemmy/reddit/etc.
It’s refreshing, and I would like to see more of that. The only thing I can do, that I can control, to perhaps see that more often on the internet is to show my gratitude here.
Thank you.
Happy to make your day :)
America was never good. It was always a fucked up country. It just got even more fucked up in the last 10 years.
I agree. You could say that for every country though, even yours.
No. America is uniquely awful.
“All men are created equal” - slave owners probably
Then takes out phrenological calliper.
Humans aren’t good. Look the fuck around.
Counter-claim: humans ARE good. Look the fuck around and see all the acts of everyday kindness.
It’s just that horrible people have what it takes to come to power. And, by extension, they know full well that if they shift the blame and make people think bad of each other, they’ll never organize against their true enemies.
Canada should carry on building a stronger relationship with the EU and should become a member. You never know, the racist neo-Nazi dumbshit Red Oblast voters, to their south, might strike again.
To be fair, the US should as well. But this time as a partner and not as a demanding child thinking they run the world. As great as it is for the world to grow stronger without the US, it would also be great for the US to be an equal partner as well.
But it’s cool if you don’t want to allow us back into the group just yet. We need to have learned our lesson before we can be an actual partner.
They aren’t going to remove tariffs.
Jeffries won’t even allow it to be brought up in the House. We have a conservative infestation in the Dem party. If we can’t get rid of the roaches in our own party, how can we get rid of the roaches in the rest of our government?

I wish we would. I want to be able to buy from ebikes.ca again without crazy shipping fees.
Wish in one hand, shit in the other. See which one fills up first.
I wish I had more shit
its both hands theres so much shit
Likewise I’d like to be able to buy homelab server stuff from just over the southern border off eBay again without the fees being 10x the price of the item. I saw a $30 HDD backplane with $400 shipping
There’s a strong economic incentive to have a legislative majority rein in the Presidential power to levy tariffs.
Democrats won’t do it. But they have a powerful incentive to do it. But they won’t.
There’s a strong economic incentive to have a legislative majority rein in the Presidential power to levy tariffs.
The courts have repeatedly ruled that he doesn’t even have the power to levy the tariffs he has, and yet people are still having to pay them.
The courts ruled against IEEPA based tariffs specifically.
That was just one layer in a thick stack of tariffs imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act 1962 (National Security), 301 of the Trade Act 1974 (Unfair Trade Practices) and 122 (150 day Balance of Payment Deficit rule), the anti dumping rules, and countervailing duties through the Commerce Department (the President has been granted authority under law to retaliate against foreign tariffs without Congressional dispensation).
Courts have yet to limit any of these powers. Congress could amend any of them or simply impose new oversight and limitations on presidential power to impose tariffs generally speaking.
As an American, I kind of get it and even bitterly endorse this. We deserve it in so far as a country could deserve something.
Unfortunately, even if this was true the average American who’d suffer the consequences would be too incredibly fucking stupid to understand and would learn nothing from this.
You can remove the UK… They’re effectively the US next door to the EU.
UK has been drifting back lately. UK and EU just discussed and came to some agreements for a relationship reset.
American here. My apologies and do stay the course. There’s still a lot of stupid left in this country. Hopefully it gets sorted out in my lifetime.
Dane here. I wish Europe was on the political trajectory that the US seems to be now. We might have few EU-Trumps in our future 🤦
Hopefully we can unite the world in peace and harmony before the psychos blow it up.
Every couple of years we will flip flop between batshit crazy and somewhat less crazy. You need to move on from us. This is not healthy.
Like a toxic ex that you can’t seem to get rid of.
Sad.
In your opinion, what would it take for the US to push for electoral reform of some kind?
Violent Revolution.
Things will need to get much worse before that happens. Elections were meant to be bloodless revolutions, but we are shackled to the two party system. This make peaceful revolution almost impossible (almost).
Sadly, that’ll never happen. Americans only protests when it’s convenient, and they’ll never boycott the things they will not let go of.
It’s funny that Americans laugh at the French joking they always surrender etc, but they sure as shit know how to protest, and protest about even the slightest reduction in personal rights. Americans are the weak ones.
I get what you’re saying, but I wouldn’t call it funny. It’s fucking insane. Americans (speaking from having been one for a looooong time) by-and-large won’t move a muscle if it comes at a cost of effort. But boy do we love being seen standing against all the things that we believe are bad.
It’s a show. At the end of the day, they cannot be bothered to make the necessary sacrifices it would take to move the needle even an inch in their favor.
Unfortunately for many Americans, they don’t have anything close to the level of safety nets the French have. When most of your population is a single day of missed work away from homelessness or not being able to afford something like insulin, it gets pretty fucking hard to do much.
And how did the French get there… Do you think the guys that stormed the Bastille had sick leave and a 40 hour workweek
Are you willing to sacrifice your kids and partner? Not so many people are. I’m the primary earner in my home and if I lost my job my wife and children would be homeless and hungry. If it was only me, sure, I’ll burn down some data centers or storm a castle or whatever, but it’s not and that’s the reality for a lot of people. So, instead, we do what we can, by voting and trying to make some change. I agree that if everyone got up and did something all at once shit would change real fuckin’ quick, but do you think you can convince most people that their loved ones are worth losing?
They did have lots of cake apparently. /s
There is an interstate pact that has 82% of electoral college votes required to subvert the electoral college and elect the president via a national popular vote. With the blue tsunami this week, it could in theory reach 100%, in which case the odds of the US ever having a Republican president again drop significantly since the majority of recent Republican presidental wins have actually lost the popular vote.
problem is the pact is unenforceable. if a purple state in the compact swings red, there’s no guarantee they’ll vote with the popular vote.
it needs a constitutional amendment
Well, no. The entire premise is that the states pass laws giving their EC votes to the winner of the popular vote. It’s not just a pinky promise lol. Those laws would have to be overturned by their state legislatures in advance.
The only part that makes it a pact is that none of the state laws go into effect until enough other states pass their laws.
right, and there are already faithless elector laws. but the ones i’m familiar with, they punish casting the wrong vote. they don’t correct it.
It’s just as enforceable as any other state law or constitution.
I would say money out of politics is a good start. Citizens United needs to go.
Beyond that though, American willingly voted in a man twice who said he grabs women by the pussy.
- A segment of the population was ok with that
- A segment of the population didn’t care enough and either stayed home or still voted for him.
Then there’s all the other shitty things about him that were known for years prior to 2016.
I don’t know how you fix that. America shows us all who they are and how do you change who you are? A sexist, racist, money obsessed bipolar lunatic.
If it was revealed that the federal government is mostly a front to transnational criminal syndicates that traffic humans, smuggle drugs and weapons.
Oh wait…
Yeah, it all changed in the 70s. Oh wait.
I don’t remember the percentage of the top of my head, but in America a huge amount of people are one unexpected large bill away from poverty and a lot of people are living pay check to pay check. Once a significant portion of America can no longer afford bread, then we might see some change… and likely deaths.
Bread is cheap. Rent is expensive. People won’t go hungry and revolt, they’ll go homeless and live in their cars.
This is not 1850. The world has changed. You gotta talk to people to build your movement. 100 years ago, people lived in communities and organised around the dinner table. Now try inviting someone over for porridge to discuss revolting against the king. They’ll tell you they’re too busy for a revolution. They’re a half hour drive away from you and they’re exhausted from 12 hours telling Copilot to balance spreadsheets. They’ll order maccas over doordash, eat while doomscrolling, and fall asleep.
They keep us just comfortable enough that we’ll keep running the maze for our next slice of cheese, but far too busy to question the maze itself. And they train us to respond to economic stress by running harder.
Well, for now. I’ve watched bread go from 30-40 cents a loaf to 3 dollars for the cheap stuff and 7-10 dollars for the fancy stuff - and that’s not considering whether the quality remains the same or has been diminished by ongoing efforts to reduce costs. Continued climate change threatens global food supply. RIsing energy costs may also threaten local food supplies that depend on steady trucking.
The rising price of bread is why our circuses have become more and more ridiculous.
Probably getting rid of Citizen’s United, taxing the wealthy correctly, getting rid of the electoral college, reworking the makeup of the Supreme Court, and ranked choice voting would do most of it. All hard but doable.
Theoretically we could end the electoral college next year. There’s a thing called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. We now have trifectas in enough states for it to go in effect, should a few more states join. We also have Congress too (needed because they’ll have to approve it). It’s unlikely the federal government can force the states to do ranked choice voting without a Constitutional amendment. But we could implement it on a state by state basis. The Supreme Court could be reshaped by the next President and a willing Congress - the needed precedent is already there in the circuit courts. Citizen’s United is trickiest. The straightforward approach requires either a Constitutional amendment or the Supreme Court to overturn itself. But it’s possible there’s some tricky alternate paths to accomplish the goal. One of them is convincing enough states to ban corporate spending on political speech. Since corporations are a state creation, they alone have that sort of power. Problem is even one non cooperating state could possibly ruin that. But there might be other ways too.
I’m unsure electoral reform by itself is going to happen. The problem is, we have a 250 year old constitution that hasn’t modernized well, and old money has sunk its teeth deeply into the current system such that it’s ineffective at real change. The idea of a 1 time, 5% wealth tax is the cutting edge of what’s considered “radical”.
In my opinion, what it will take, is someone like Trump, or worse than Trump, finally shaking the country to a breaking point where the old system collapses. And I’ll be honest - I’d love to see the change, but I’m not sure I’ll survive the surgery to get there. But what I think it will take is the country finally reaching a point where they push for a constitutional convention, and in that setting, lay out reforms for our current electoral process. Anything short of that, and you’re basically looking to get to a majority of people in power willing to vote to give up their own power. That’s not impossible, but tends only to be true in rare cases, immediately after a huge shift in power like a revolution.
Since voting in the USA is controlled at the state level, it would require a different effort on each state to replace First-past-the-post voting and other crucial reforms. Alaska has Ranked Choice Voting actually, despite conservatives putting ballot initiatives to go back to FPTP voting every election cycle.
The good news is that means electoral reform can happen easier at the state level then trying to push shit through at the federal level.
The bad news is liberals in this country get rock hard when they yell and scream at those disenfranchised by the two party system. They adore their chains.
Define electoral reform. Ranked voting in all states?
Im actually a fan of STAR voting. Here is a website that breaks down the advantages STAR voting has over Ranked Choice Voting.
That said, RCV is still a massive improvement over First-past-the-post.
Don’t count on it, they are proud that their constitution is really old.
Yup forgiveness has to be earned. It’s called healthy boundaries.
It’s too late.
Agreed
