An Italian chef sacked from a Brisbane restaurant had refused to put pineapple on a pizza because it was an “insult to his culture”.
Davide Tamburella was fired from the now-closed La Costa restaurant in May, a fortnight after a meeting with management who had a string of complaints about the chef’s behaviour.
Among them were Tamburella’s refusal to provide ham and pineapple pizza for guests at a function. At the time, the chef had stated that any direction from management “need not be followed when it is offensive to his culture”.
The details came to light after the chef went to Australia’s Fair Work Commission claiming he had been unfairly dismissed.
In its ruling released on Tuesday, the commission noted that Tamburella’s refusal to put pineapple on the pizzas was because “he considers, as an Italian, that putting pineapple on a pizza is an insult to his culture”.
Can’t believe people still care about this, it’s like the lamest possible culture war. Pineapple on pizza, honey on pizza, figs on pizza, whatever. Pizza is inherently pretty rich and you can balance it out really well with something sweet.
The real culture war is whether you think “traditional” Italian pizza is any good or not. Oh we “invented” cheese and sauce on bread, everyone else doing it is wrong, somehow
Actual pizza in Italy kinda sucks it’s more like a weak flatbread
D&D character alignment chart showing that bruschetta is pizza, and so is the city of Midgar
I only had bad pizza once and that involved 2cm of raw dough.
Hold up, tell me about that figs on pizza that sounds pretty fire
Look into “white” pizza. It’s pizza with an olive oil base instead of tomato sauce, and they get wild. Arugula, goat cheese, caramelized figs is a favored one.
I refuse to call a food that sounds that good white
It truly is fire. Especially a fig jam spread.
Perfect username post combo
How dare you insult my heritage flatbread with your spjney fruit full of acid
Other concerns were raised about Tamburella using foul language, his communication style and “escalation of frustration in the workplace”.
The ruling also detailed an incident at work in April this year where Tamburella fractured bones in his right hand when he struck a metal hand rail.
Let’s hear more about those, BBC. No, just the pineapple stuff? Okay.
yeah, they’re doing an actual psyop on you and it’s working
I put pineapple on pizza purely out of spite
no lie i actually bought pineapple to put on homemade pizza last night as in i had all the stuff and had to go to the store to get the pineapple chunks
It’s great for balancing out the savory / salt of the other ingredients.
I actually like pineapple on pizza, I like pinneapple + olive sweet and sour combo.
I do pineapples and jalapeños
This is the way. So good
Pineapple on pizza is good and this is a hill I will die on
tomatoes aren’t traditional in his culture
every culinary tradition people hold dear is something their great grandparents started doing
Yeah one of my grandparents likes to throw around “traditional” a lot in regards to food and it’s just code for “the way I like it”
For Italians, it’s more like “every culinary tradition people hold dear is something their dad started doing.”
Up until the 70s, most of Italy did not regularly consume pasta as part of their diet. Depending on what part of Italy he’s from, his great grandparents and grandparents may have lived an entire life and died without having ever consumed either pasta or tomato.
Right italy wasnt actually a country until not too long ago
I respect the commitment to the bit

Is someone gonna tell him that pizza isn’t from Italy?
Foods similar to pizza have been prepared since ancient times. References to pizza-like dishes appear throughout early history.
In the 6th century BCE, Persian soldiers serving under Darius the Great baked flatbreads with cheese and dates on top of their battle shields.[6][7]
Sounds good actually
baked on top of their battle shields
dudes rock
The ossetians have a dish that’s a hollow bread filled cheese, and the toppings are a spoonful of butter and slow roasted lamb. So they probably were eating pizza like dishes before they even got to Iran.
it looks delicious, it’s probably so fatty because it gets cold up there.
Not however pizza. I am pretty sure every culture had something similar. That is the logical way to arrange those ingredients
Even without cheese, it’s a taco.
As a professional pizza guy, as long as the ingredients work together you can out anything on a pizza. It’s just bread.

According to diaspora Italians that won’t shut the fuck up about how they know what true culture is they would probably claim that Italy perfected it and everything else is derivative.
Diaspora Italians make better pizza than Italians so they’re just shooting themselves in the ass
Also, Italians literally cut their pizza with scissors like complete imbeciles, 2000 years later and you’re still doing so at that point he jig is up, everyone knows you’re just being assholes
Oh I was specifically thinking about my friends dad who moved to the U.S. at 3 and never forgave his parents for it. Dude has framed posters of Rocky movies and only reads books about ancient Rome, claims they invented civilization etc.
OG yaoi enjoyer. Has pictures cute boys hung up. Likes reading about BL stories like Petrocleus
The only thing worse than Italians being all mamma-mia about pineapple on pizza is Americans who want to claim pizza was invented in the USA.
No it fucking wasn’t. Shut the fuck up.
It’s extremely well documented that tomato paste on flat bread + olive oil + other toppings started in Naples.
Florida is in the USA
Tomato sauce on a flatbed with cheese is a Mexican invention. It isn’t their fault the Italians can’t make a good tortilla but they don’t have to appropriate the culture like that
Yet more evidence that Italians are the evil universe version of Mexicans.
Hard confirm
I love Italian Marxists claiming that the modern pizza was invented in the US though.
It’s an international invention.
Genome project-like decades long international collaboration of the world’s leading minds utilizing bleeding edge state of the art technology but it’s for the concept of putting cheese on bread.

Do we know who did the anti pineapple psyop? I want to belive it is radical Hawaiian separatists to get the name of the pizza changed to a less rascist one.
the rare based kind of separatism
Wasn’t pineapple and ham pizza a Canadian invention?
Yes! Pineapple and ham pizza is both unusual and recent enough that we have very solid understanding of the history.
Greek-born restauranteur Sam Panopoulos first invented, named, and sold it in 1968 at Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, ON. He claims that he was inspired by Chinese flavor combinations(?) and the name actually came from the brand name (Hawaiian Pineapple Company) of the canned pineapple he happened to purchase.
Probably. I more ment how pineapples are from south America and we only associate with Hawaii due to brutal colonialism
lol lmao
Dipshits getting huffy about fruit on a pizza will never not be pathetic. No one’s forcing you to eat it asshole, settle the fuck down
A third fruit, after tomatos and olives.
They put banana on pizza in Sweden, which personally I cheer, because fuck nationalism tied to food. Every culture has a flatbread with stuff on it so the italians can go fuck themselves.
Eggs on pizza in Brasil
My favorite that I didn’t even realize until recently was controversial is corn.
In Samsung Republic, it’s standard topping automatically included with your order unless you specifically request otherwise
